Past General Meeting Program
August 10, 2010

Flash Video

This month's presentation was led by President Charlie Semple.  At the suggestion of Director Irv Hershman, Charlie used the flash video of the Nov. 5, 2009 Charlie Rose TV program about Ken Auletta's book Googled. The video was streamed using the DSL connection at the hall and was displayed on a large screen using our projector. Picture quality was about equal to playing a videotape and the sound channel was good.

After viewing the video, Member Gilbet Ialongo demonstrated how to record it on a hard drive using Video DownloadHelper, a free Firefox add-on.  The add-on detects the availability of video content available through a web page by displaying a rotating icon in the navigation tool bar of Firefox. After downloading a portion of the video, VLC LAN, a free media player; was used to play it; it worked very well.

Gilbert had recorded the Charlie Rose program earlier on a CD and played a short excerpt; it looked a little better than the streaming video and the sound quality was considerably better.

While much was learned from this meeting, there's more. With many sources of video and TV programs available on the Internet, knowing how to deal with this material can be educational, informative and entertaining.
