PowerQuest Datakeeper 3.0
by Bart Koslow, LACS
There are two types of computer users: those who
backup files and those who will eventually lose their files or data. I use
Datakeeper to back up my important files on a regular basis. Datakeeper is an
easy-to-use and comprehensive program. The online help file is relatively short,
but complete. The PDF file on the CD-ROM, may be used to print a manual.
Installation
Datakeeper will backup to any device. I backup to
a second hard drive. Backing up a few hundred megabytes takes about one minute.
In addition, for super critical backups, I backup to a CD-RW from time to time.
If you do not have enough space on your backup media, Datakeeper will back up to
multiple floppies, CDs, etc. You configure each backup by viewing an Explorer
like file hierarchy and checking the folders or files you wish to backup. Select
your backup destination and save the configuration. I have two different
configurations I use, one to my second hard drive and one to the CD-RW. Some of
the backup options are backing up at Windows startup, scheduled backups using
Windows scheduler and continuous backups in the background. You may apply
filters to backup specific types of files, to ones that have been changed after
a specified date and time, and you may further exclude or include particular
files or folders or groups of files or folders. Datakeeper can compress and
password-protect your backups and will create a backup log.
Use
Restoring files is simple. Load the backup
configuration you wish, select the files you wish to restore, the backup
destination and whether you want to overwrite files or not. That is all there is
to it.
I like this program and would unhesitatingly
recommend it.
